A Brave New Year

That's what it's going to be -- a brave new year. And that's the title of my brand new project -- "Brave New Year." I'm beside myself with excitement.

You've all been asking for recordings of some of my songs (like "This Time Tomorrow" and "The Harvest" and even "Girlfriend Patrol") for a good long while. And it's finally going to happen.

It was 2003 when I put out my last album "The Wait-a-While Estates." That's unacceptable! I've had the music for a while... but the problem has been finding the money for the project. Recording an album is an expensive project. But in the very near future, I will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise that money. If all goes well, I'm hoping to have a brand new album in hand shortly after the new year. You'll hear much more about the Kickstarter project in the near future. I'm doing final edits to my video now. It will truly be up very soon.

So why "Brave New Year"? Well, that's what I'm hoping it's going to be. Many of you know that I have been working as a computer programmer for a long time, now. My degrees are in math and computer science. I've had a stable job with a contractor for 11+ years. But I'm also in my 22nd year of teaching piano. Even as I worked my computer jobs, I've taught piano part time. A few years ago I went to part-time computer work and upped my studio size. Over the summer I evaluated the success of my business, and a few weeks ago I made the leap -- I left my computer job, and I am now a full time musician. It's one of the most exhilarating things I've done in a long time, maybe ever. It's also one of the most terrifying! But I keep looking at all the opportunities that have fallen in my lap in even just the last few months. I look at my full roster of students and the performing I'm able to do, the classes I teach, and the songs I've written... and I take a deep breath and say, "This is going to be OK. More than OK, even." And the truth is that I'm in an ideal situation, because I can always go back to my computer career if I need to. But all of this has left me thinking about what a "Brave New Year" 2015 is going to be. So why not start it out with a new album, too?!

I'm going to be blogging about the CD recording process here. It's an introspective process and has lots of ups and downs and decisions and technical and creative aspects that I'm excited to write about. So I hope you'll join me here to read about them. I'll also answer any questions that folks may have. So stay tuned!

Libby, Being your own boss is the greatest challenge you can give yourself. Overcoming the fear will be your gage of success. So surround yourself with positive people and be happy every day that you can live this life supporting yourself in doing what you love. Good luck, you will succeed.
